Abstract

Phthalates is a plasticizer that comes in several variants. Phthalates have been known to effect life harshly. It would be more expensive for alternatives, but it would benefit consumers positively. This chemical seriously should be reconsidered for use.

Phthalates have been seen to effect people only negatively when consumed. The European market has seen positive results with the absence of phthalates, which can be duplicated in the United States. European consumers have promised a positive healthier phthalate free market, consumers everywhere would feel confident that they are buying something healthier for them.

Using phthalates longer could mean effecting human masses for more generations to come, if they are existent. Phthalates are poisons we do not need. Unlike flame retardants, phthalates do not contribute positive more than they contribute negative. Flame retardants help protect and can stay on the market until alternatives are tangible. The future is now when it comes to Phthalates. The chapter Europe has written for phthalate alternatives should be taken and used.

Background

Phthalates are widely used as a plastic softener. This additive makes plastics, with a wide range of uses, bendable and flexible to the touch. Consumer products make use of this chemical because of its convenience. Without this, plastics could not be used to accommodate to bendable conditions.

Specific products it’s in
Plastics>Consumer Products>Car parts, Plastic clothing, Children Toys, Shampoos

What are the good things (positives)
This Chemical helps plastics which otherwise would not be bendable under the consumers authority.

Where it is used (what countries)
Legally this chemical can and is used in the United States. Products made in the United States cannot be marketed or distributed in the European market. In recent awakening of what products are in toys and other products produced in China, lead had been the most profound chemical involved. The flawed Chinese laws are partially to blame.

Human health implications

Possible dangers
Phthalates have been known to cause complications with the liver, kidneys and lungs. Studies in rodents have shown that Phthalates have impacted their reproductive systems.
Specific processes
Include chemical reactions that take place in the body.
Phthalates have are known to the EPA as “probable human carcinogens.” In animal studies, results have shown any amount of phthalates to cause cancer of the liver and target the reproductive system through the testes.
Include human systems involved (eg reproductive, endocrine)
Organs that do processing, specifically, Liver, Lungs and Kidneys, and the Reproductive system have all been seen to be effected when exposed to phthalates in animal studies.

Environmental implications

Specific systems with which it reacts
Phthalates have been proven not to be able to enter the food chain. This was speculated after knowledge of phthalates having the ability to be ingested orally.

Economic/Political Impact

What if it were banned?
Europe has been the only Leader in banning Phthalates. There they have subjected themselves to alternatives. There they have realized its negatives outweigh the negatives. There they have changed their market to not allow the use of phthalates. Before the ban of 3 specific phthalates used in child toys, there was a temporary band. After this 6 year ban, the three types of phthalates were banned. This appears to be an ease on the market for these products. This can be duplicated
What products would we not have if it were banned?
Plasticizers of many varieties have been created in place of all types of phthalates to accommodate for all products. If not, companies in Europe have reformulated to be able to sell.
What countries export this product?
Europe
How/If a ban affects you (or the average American)
Americans could expect to see the absence of some products if the ban of Phthalates occurs. Only temporary absence can be expected
What are the political ramifications of banning this chemical?
First, it would be highly undesirable for the market to change for new accommodations. The transition could only be smooth for both parties: political and economic because the only beneficiary of the change would be consumers.
